Our Centre Philosophy

Our View of Tamariki

At Highfield Haven, we see every tamaiti as a capable, confident, and curious learner. We believe children grow and thrive through loving relationships, meaningful experiences, and a strong sense of mana, identity, and belonging.

Learning Through Play

We value play as the foundation for learning. Through exploration, discovery, creativity, and hands-on experiences, tamariki are supported to develop confidence, curiosity, and problem-solving skills in ways that are meaningful and joyful.

Whanaungatanga | Relationships and Belonging

Strong relationships are at the heart of all we do. We nurture whanaungatanga by creating warm, respectful connections with tamariki, whānau, and kaiako, so every child feels safe, supported, and that they truly belong.

Manaakitanga | Care and Kindness

We are committed to manaakitanga by providing a caring, inclusive, and respectful environment where tamariki are valued and uplifted. We encourage kindness, empathy, and consideration for others in everyday interactions.

Ako | Learning Together

We embrace ako, recognising that learning is reciprocal. Kaiako guide, support, and learn alongside tamariki as they explore their interests, build confidence, and develop independence through shared learning experiences.

Growing Confidence and Independence

We support tamariki to build rangatiratanga by encouraging choice-making, self-help skills, responsibility, and confidence in their own abilities. As children grow, they are empowered to explore, communicate, and engage with the world around them.

Our Learning Priorities

Our philosophy is shaped by the values and learning priorities that are important to our centre: Mana Whenua, Ngākau, Aroha, Tuakiritanga, Ako, Manaakitanga, and Whanaungatanga. These guide our teaching and help us create a place where tamariki can flourish in their hearts, minds, and mana.

Our Commitment to Whānau

We believe learning is a shared journey. By working in partnership with whānau, we create a connected community where children feel held, heard, and supported as they grow, learn, and prepare for the next stages of their journey.
